Club Celebrates Tenth Anniversary with a Free Lunch

DON’T let anyone tell you there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Denton Luncheon Club will be hosting one on Thursday, October 27, to celebrate its tenth anniversary and its move to the spacious surroundings of Denton Festival Hall.

The club was founded by Cllr Denise Ward, who represents Denton North East ward, as a place to bring people together over a hot and nourishing meal.

Since the first meeting, which attracted just 13 people, attendance has grown to a full-capacity 55 with a waiting list, forcing a move from Victoria Park Community Centre to the festival hall which is bigger and has better preparation facilities.

Meals, all of which are cooked by Cllr Ward, include meat and potato and cheese and onion pies, vegetables, apple crumble and custard, tea and coffee.

The celebration event also includes bingo and a raffle and entertainment from singer/comedian Dom Collins who is known for his topical funny songs.

Cllr Mike Glover, the Civic Mayor of Tameside, who will be attending the celebration meal with Cllr Ged Cooney, the council’s executive leader, said: “Denton Luncheon Club is a great example of how a small and simple idea can grow into something really special.

“Since its humble beginnings in 2012 the club has become established at the heart of the community. In the ensuing years it’s played a huge role in breaking down isolation and bringing people together, improving their wellbeing in the process.

“I would like to thank my friend and colleague Cllr Denise Ward and her fellow ward councillors for the fantastic job they have done to create this wonderful place which has resulted in so many enduring friendships.

“What better way to meet people than over a good meal?”
